Germany's 3D‑Printed Housing Projects Aim to Ease Shortage

Germany faces a record housing deficit of about 1.4 million units at the end of 2024, with construction output down 14.4 % year‑on‑year. In response, a handful of firms are testing large‑scale 3D‑printing of residential buildings.

Architect Alexander Hoffmann’s team printed the country’s first fully 3D‑printed house in Beckum, North‑Rhine Westphalia, between 2020‑21. The two‑storey, 160 m² dwelling was printed in roughly 100 hours of concrete extrusion and was completed in eight months, now occupied by residents. A second project, the Wavehouse data‑center in Heidelberg built in 2023, showcased design freedom with its undulating façade.

Recognising that singular, iconic structures cannot solve the affordability crisis, Hoffmann and partners launched DREIHAUS, a serial three‑storey residential block produced by a 3D printer in collaboration with PERI 3D Construction. The initiative aims to create cost‑effective, repeatable housing units to address Germany’s shortage, though experts caution that permitting, labor and material costs remain major bottlenecks.
