Germany's battery storage market expands record‑fast but faces project uncertainty
Tauber Energy, part of the Tauber‑Solar group, began construction in February 2026 of a 40 MWh battery storage system on the Wartberg near Wertheim. The facility, scheduled for commissioning in summer 2026, will have a 15.5 MW grid connection and is designed to supply roughly 40 000 households for about 2.6 hours, while operating flexibly to balance the grid. The project emphasizes a data‑driven operation model that monitors cell behavior and thermal development to optimise maintenance and performance.
The German battery‑storage market is booming: in the first quarter of 2026, installations rose by 290 % year‑on‑year, adding over 2 GWh of capacity and bringing total domestic storage to around 30 GWh, including roughly 6 GWh of large‑scale units. ECO STOR secured financing for the country’s largest storage project—a 300 MW, 718 MWh plant in Förderstedt—aiming for full operation in 2027 without public subsidies. However, an Enervis analysis finds that only about 15 GWh of the projected additional capacity to 2029 is firmly secured, with roughly 58 GWh still uncertain due to lengthy grid‑connection procedures, regulatory hurdles, and a lack of standardisation. Industry bodies are calling on the federal government to streamline approvals and enable multi‑use operation to sustain the rapid growth of battery storage as a critical component of Germany’s renewable‑energy transition.
