Germany’s beer sector is contracting sharply. Official statistics show that the number of active breweries fell to 1,415 in 2025, a drop of 53 facilities from the previous year and 137 fewer than in 2019 – an 8.8 % decline over six years. More than half of German breweries are small‑scale, producing up to 100 000 litres a year, while only eight plants exceeded 200 million litres in 2025. Rising production costs – especially energy, raw materials and logistics – and changing consumer habits are driving the downturn. Surveys indicate that roughly one‑third of respondents have stopped drinking alcoholic beer, while interest in non‑alcoholic variants is growing.
Industry officials describe the situation as a “structural crisis,” with the fragmented market and high operating expenses putting pressure on both small and larger producers.
