Germany's bicycle rental market shows significant growth potential

The bicycle rental and subscription market in Germany remains a niche sector despite significant potential. According to data from the industry association Zukunft Fahrrad, there were 102,550 bicycles available through 24-hour bike-sharing systems as of early September, representing a 1.5 percent increase from the previous year.

In addition to bike-sharing, the market includes approximately 98,000 private bicycle subscriptions and up to 14,000 commercial contracts, often used by delivery services. These figures are considered low when compared to Germany’s total bicycle stock of over 90 million and approximately 3.8 million new bicycle sales this year.

Wasilis von Rauch, managing director of Zukunft Fahrrad, suggests that the market could be expanded through tax incentives for bike-sharing and subscriptions. He proposed the implementation of simplified mobility budgets to help employers provide sustainable transport options to employees. Furthermore, the association is calling for increased market oversight to address the use of illegal, motorized fatbikes by delivery services, advocating for commercial rental bicycles as a safer and more reliable alternative.
