Germany's CDU Reaffirms Ban on AfD Coalitions Ahead of Regional Elections
CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Torsten Frei said the party will continue its "cordon sanitaire" that forbids any cooperation with the far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD). He stressed that the federal CDU leadership does not intervene in regional government formation, but the prohibition of working with the AfD is a fundamental party decision.
Ahead of three state elections in September – Saxony‑Anhalt on 6 September and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern and Berlin on 20 September – the AfD is polling around 40 % in Saxony‑Anhalt. An Infrates poll shows the AfD at 41 %, CDU at 24 %, The Left at 13 %, SPD at 7 % and the Greens at 5 %. If the SPD and Greens fall below the 5 % threshold, the AfD could secure an absolute majority of seats.
