Pro Bahn demands multi-year funding for German rail renovations

The passenger association Pro Bahn is calling for multi-year financial commitments for German railway renovations to ensure more reliable and cost-effective operations. Association chairman Lukas Iffländer argues that current annual budget cycles force construction programs to be stretched and contracts to be unnecessarily small, increasing overall costs. While approximately 16.3 billion euros are allocated for network maintenance this year, the amount is expected to decrease to 11.5 billion euros in 2027.

In a separate development, DB InfraGO head Philipp Nagl has suggested legislative changes regarding how train traffic is handled when people are detected on the tracks. Nagl seeks to minimize service interruptions, provided there is no immediate danger or involvement of children. Additionally, discussions have highlighted the need to modernize aging level crossings, which frequently cause delays and economic disruptions for rail operators.
