Germany political leaders debate course corrections following regional elections

German political leaders are navigating significant shifts following recent regional elections. Thuringia's Minister President Mario Voigt (CDU) has called for a programmatic new beginning and a major course correction for the federal government. Voigt emphasized the need for economic growth, innovation, and social fairness, specifically demanding the permanent abolition of the CO2 tax on oil and gas to address cost-of-living concerns.

In response to election losses, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is scheduled to meet with CDU state premiers and regional leaders on October 11 to discuss the party and government's future direction. Meanwhile, Chancellor's Office Chief Nina Warken has assured economic associations that planned government reforms will proceed with speed and stability.

Internal tensions are also visible within the coalition. Baden-Württemberg Minister President Cem Özdemir (Greens) has strongly advised against forming a coalition with the Left Party in Berlin, citing concerns over antisemitism and security issues. Additionally, negotiations regarding the EU budget for 2028-2034 are underway, with the European Commission proposing an inflation-adjusted framework of approximately 1.76 trillion euros.
