Berlin Pride vehicle attack leaves 1 dead, 29 injured

On the night of 26 July 2026 a white van rammed into a crowd of spectators in Berlin’s Tiergarten park during the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride parade. The vehicle struck dozens of people, killing a woman and wounding 29 others, some seriously.

Police identified the driver as 21‑year‑old Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent who had previously been convicted for preparing a terrorist offence and was subject to a deradicalisation programme. Ballout had attempted to join the Islamic State in 2025.

After the crash Ballout fled the scene, later attacking officers in a Spandau community garden with a stabbing weapon. He was shot dead by the SEK police unit. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt classified the incident as an Islamist‑motivated terrorist attack, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the violence, pledging a security overhaul. The investigation has been transferred to federal prosecutors and a nationwide manhunt involving border and airport checks was launched.
