Germany's civil protection agencies showcase radiation safety and release municipal defence guide
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) presented its capabilities at the Interschutz trade fair in Hannover, stressing that radiation threats can be measured and managed. BfS President Inge Paulini highlighted the agency’s network of about 1,700 radiation probes and its role in supporting the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the Radiological Situation Centre, which together assess emergencies ranging from nuclear plant accidents to military radiation incidents.
The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) published the first two work aids of its "Wegweiser zur Zivilen Verteidigung in Kommunen" project. The guides, authored under BBK President Grit Tüngler, offer municipalities practical scenarios—including cyber‑attacks on administrations, power or water supply outages, transport disruptions and large‑scale population movements—to help local authorities maintain operational capability and coordinate with emergency services, utilities, police and the armed forces.
Together, the efforts aim to strengthen Germany’s overall civil defence infrastructure and improve preparedness for both radiological and hybrid threats.
