Germany's coalition faces public opposition to extended fixed-term employment contracts

The governing coalition in Germany plans to broaden the use of unrestricted fixed‑term contracts, allowing hires up to 48 months and permitting six extensions for employees hired through the end of 2030. A YouGov poll commissioned by the German Press Agency surveyed 6,200 adults on July 2‑3 and found that 54 % of respondents reject the reform, while 26 % support it. Within the opposition, 33 % disapprove completely and a further 21 % are rather opposed; 8 % fully approve and 18 % are rather in favour, with 19 % undecided or non‑responsive.
