Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger under high-level police protection
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger is currently under high-level police protection, with security measures comparable to those provided to the German Chancellor. This increased security follows potential Russian threats, including reported assassination plots and incidents such as the burning of his garden house and demonstrations at his residence. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has also warned defense industry employees about an elevated risk of espionage and sabotage by Russian state actors.
Papperger has expressed his commitment to his role, stating, "Kneifen gilt nicht in dem Bereich" (Giving up is not an option in this field), and intends to continue leading the company through the remainder of his contract. He also commented on Germany's ongoing debates regarding military service, noting that while recruitment for the Bundeswehr has seen a 24 percent increase since new laws took effect in January, voluntary service may not suffice to meet national defense requirements.
Under the new military service law, mandatory screening is required for men born in 2008 or later to bolster voluntary recruitment. Should these targets not be met, the Bundestag may implement a need-based conscription (Bedarfswehrpflicht). The German government is also preparing provisions to reactivate civilian service should full conscription return.
