Germany's 'Deutschland spricht' Launches Political Debate Platform

The media initiative "Deutschland spricht," originally started by Die Zeit and now backed by publications including Bild, Der Spiegel, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Handelsblatt and several regional papers, is creating an online matching service that pairs Germans with opposite political views for face‑to‑face conversations. Participants answer eight yes‑or‑no statements on topics such as work hours, German reunification, and artificial intelligence; the system then arranges one‑on‑one meetings scheduled to begin on Sunday, 30 August across the country.

At the same time, Austrian radio host Herbert Auinger used his programme Radio Dispositiv to warn of growing polarization, describing how dissenting opinions increasingly face “cancel culture” and the threat of opaque EU sanctions. He called for the restoration of free public discourse, echoing concerns that the decline of civil debate could undermine democratic norms.
