Germany's DGB calls mass protest in Berlin against social reforms

The German trade union federation (DGB) announced a large demonstration in Berlin for 27 June, aiming to gather several thousand participants to oppose the government's planned reforms on pensions, health care, long‑term care and working hours. The union warns that without constructive dialogue the pressure on social security systems will increase and urges the government to adopt sustainable solutions.

The CDU criticised the timing, arguing that organising a protest before negotiations with employers and unions send a wrong signal. DGB leaders, however, say the rally is meant to alert the government to the risks of a social‑policy rollback and to mobilise a broad alliance of workers and parties.

The DGB’s campaign slogan, “Jetzt reicht's!” (Enough is enough), emphasises opposition to perceived social cut‑backs and calls for stronger taxation of high‑income earners to fund the welfare state.
