Germany's diverse brewing culture and historic breweries

Germany possesses a diverse brewing culture featuring over 1,500 active breweries and approximately 7,000 historical varieties. While the Oktoberfest in Munich is a globally recognized symbol of this tradition, the country's beer landscape is a complex mosaic shaped by regional geography, politics, and history.

In Düsseldorf, Brauerei Schumacher stands as one of the city's few remaining independent breweries. Established in 1838 after Johannes Matthias Schumacher took over the Brauerei Im Sonnenaufgang, the brewery underwent technological modernization between 1980 and 1990. It produces Schumacher Alt, which is noted as one of the oldest Altbier styles still in production.

Regional styles vary significantly across the country, from the Berliner Weisse in Berlin and the dark notes of Saxony to the traditional styles found in Bavaria and Franconia.
