Following the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, the country was divided into occupation zones and formally split into two separate nations in 1949. This division forced many to make difficult choices regarding employment and residence. In 1958, Hans Guetinger moved his family from Babenhausen, Bavaria, to Brieskow-Finkenheerd in the GDR to seek work at a power station, joining a movement of people seeking stability in the East during a period when millions were moving West for economic opportunities.
