Germany's Drought Drives Up Vegetable Prices, Shortens Fries
A severe drought across Germany has reduced the potato harvest and limited water extraction in key vegetable‑growing areas. Market observers report higher prices for fresh produce such as salad, cabbage and carrots, while tomatoes and zucchini have become cheaper than a year ago. The shortage is expected to lead to shorter French‑fries portions as potatoes become scarcer. Soil moisture in the Eifel region is at its driest level in 10‑50 years, and water use has been restricted to protect remaining supplies.
In neighboring Austria, the drought is also influencing a proposed data‑center project near Nickelsdorf. Local officials question how the facility will obtain sufficient cooling water, and ÖVP politicians—including Markus Ulram and Christoph Zarits—have asked the state government for details on water, energy use and job creation. State governor Hans Peter Doskozil stressed the Nickelsdorf centre will not match the size of the Kronstorf Google facility.
