Germany's trade deficit with China rises to 55 billion euros

Germany's trade deficit with China expanded significantly in the first half of 2026, rising from 40 billion euros to approximately 55 billion euros. While China remains Germany's largest overall trading partner, its importance as an export destination has declined, falling to ninth place behind smaller economies like Austria and Switzerland.

German exports to China dropped by more than 12%, totaling just under 37 billion euros. Experts from Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) attribute this decline to China's weak domestic economy, an ongoing real estate crisis, and an increasing focus on domestic value chains. Additionally, many German companies are increasing production within China to serve the local market, reducing the need for physical shipments from Germany.

Conversely, German imports from China grew by nearly 9%, reaching approximately 92 billion euros. This shift reflects China's growing technological independence and its ability to catch up with Western technology. While total German exports grew by 3.7% to nearly 817 billion euros in the first half of the year, the United States remains Germany's most important export market, despite a 6% decline in shipments to the US.
