Germany's Federal Constitutional Court to decide on public broadcasting fees
The German Federal Constitutional Court is expected to issue a ruling later this year regarding the financing of public broadcasting. The legal proceedings follow a failure among German federal states to reach an agreement on a funding model in 2024.
In 2024, the KEF finance commission recommended increasing the broadcasting fee by 58 cents to a total of 18.94 euros. Because the states did not implement this recommendation, the broadcasters ARD and ZDF filed a complaint with the court in November 2024. Judges held hearings on the matter in June.
Hamburg Media Senator Carsten Brosda (SPD) stated that the court will likely have to intervene due to the lack of political consensus. He noted that a potential compromise involving moderate, automated adjustments was previously discussed but not adopted.
