Germany's Federal Youth Games to Return to Competitive Format

The Kultusministerkonferenz has approved a shift back to a more competitive structure for the Bundesjugendspiele, allowing performances to be ranked and awarding gold, silver and bronze certificates. Frank Wagner, secretary‑general of the CDU Saar, welcomed the change, saying it restores the “performance mindset” for children.

In Baden‑Württemberg, Culture Minister Andreas Jung (CDU) announced that from next year the games will follow clear rules: pupils from third grade onward will again compete in the 50‑metre sprint, long jump and a throwing event, with points recorded in a nationwide ranking system. Jung receives backing from CDU state leader and Interior Minister Manuel Hagel, who argues that competition is a valuable life lesson. The proposal reverses a reform five years ago that had softened the competition element in favor of a more inclusive “competition” format, a move that some conservative critics have labelled “cuddle pedagogy.”
