Germany's fiber rollout hampered by contractor insolvency and stalled work
In the town of Stutensee, work on the fiber‑optic network progressed in the Friedrichstal district, where the first house connections were completed and street surfaces were fully restored. By contrast, the neighbouring Büchig area saw all construction stop in mid‑July after the contractor PBI GmbH removed its equipment. The Freiburg district court then opened a provisional insolvency proceeding for PBI GmbH on 23 July, leaving the future of the Büchig project uncertain.
In the Waldeck‑Frankenberg region, the fiber provider Goetel, based in Göttingen, has finished installations in some localities such as Frankenau while withdrawing from others. Many residents who signed interest forms have received no further communication. After weeks of silence, the company explained that rising construction and financing costs, together with changing market conditions, forced a reassessment of its expansion plans. Goetel now focuses on completing and activating existing projects and reports holding a five‑digit number of customer contracts, without announcing new rollout areas.
