Germany's Grundsicherung System Strains Courts and Jobcenters
Social courts in Germany are facing a sharp rise in urgent proceedings involving recipients of Grundsicherung, Sozialhilfe and related benefits. In 2025 more than 300,000 cases were filed nationwide and the number of fast‑track procedures jumped 47 % to nearly 40,000, with the Landessozialgericht Nordrhein‑Westfalen reporting a 55.8 % increase in such cases.
Many claimants, unable to secure legal representation, are turning to artificial‑intelligence tools to draft appeals, complaints and emergency applications. Courts warn that while AI can help sort facts, it cannot replace professional legal review and often generates fictitious judgments or irrelevant requests.
At the same time, the Federal Employment Agency reminds Grundsicherung recipients that jobcenters remain the responsible authorities for applications and benefits, especially after the 2026 transition from Bürgergeld to the new Grundsicherung. An online search tool lets claimants identify the correct jobcenter by postcode, a crucial step when moving, as the former and new jobcenters may differ on housing‑cost support.
