Germany's Hanover Region proposes centralized school kitchen to boost nutrition

The SPD parliamentary group in the Hanover region has introduced a proposal to create a municipal "regional kitchen" that would supply school meals across the area. The plan aims to standardise quality, ensure reliable supply, digitise ordering and payment systems, and strengthen regional food sourcing. It is presented as a step toward healthier, more equitable nutrition for children, especially as full‑day schools expand.

In parallel, the Berlin‑based initiative "Kantine Zukunft" showcases a model of sustainable community catering across 200 public kitchens, including kindergartens, hospitals and government offices. By serving 11.8 million meals a year, the programme demonstrates how bio‑regional menus and cooperative procurement can improve quality and environmental impact. Both efforts are presented as ways to modernise Germany’s public food provision and promote education‑linked health outcomes.
