Germany's Health Minister Faces Coalition Criticism Over Long-Term Care Funding Reform

Federal Health Minister Nina Warken presented a reform to finance Germany’s long‑term care system, aiming to address persistent deficits by shifting costs to municipalities and adjusting contributions. The proposal has provoked strong criticism from coalition partners. SPD’s Manuela Schwesig condemned the lack of state consultation, while CSU leader Klaus Holetschek called the plan “a punch to everyone who keeps the system running,” saying it merely transfers the financial burden to local authorities, families and caregivers. CSU parliamentarian Judith Gerlach acknowledged some positive elements but urged changes such as retaining contributions for family caregivers. Nursing council president Christine Vogler warned that the reform would place the primary load on patients, their relatives and professional carers rather than ensuring system sustainability.
