Germany's Home Battery and EV Storage Solutions Gain Momentum
Home battery systems are evolving from merely storing daytime solar surplus for evening use to broader functions that include self‑consumption optimisation, backup power and even market participation. Industry and policymakers note this shift as the next development stage for residential storage.
At the same time, electric vehicles are being positioned as a major source of distributed storage. Researchers estimate that the batteries of existing EVs could add roughly 120 GWh of capacity, far exceeding the about 25 GWh of stationary home storage installed so far. Pilot projects and commercial trials are testing vehicle‑to‑home (V2H) and vehicle‑to‑grid (V2G) schemes, which allow cars to feed electricity back to the house or the wider grid, helping balance renewable generation and lower household energy costs. The technical basis is already in place, with the ISO‑15118 communication standard becoming mandatory for all charging stations from 1 January 2027. Successful deployment will require bidirectional charging hardware, intelligent home‑energy‑management systems and coordination between automakers and charger operators.
