German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visits Hungary to revitalize bilateral ties
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has traveled to Budapest for his first visit to Hungary since 2019, signaling a push to revitalize bilateral relations following a change in the Hungarian government. Wadephul met with President András Baka, Foreign Minister Anita Orbán, and Economic Minister István Kapitány to discuss energy, culture, and defense cooperation.
The visit follows the recent political shift in Hungary, where Péter Magyar replaced Viktor Orbán in May. Wadephul expressed hope that this transition would allow both nations to build a foundation of mutual trust and return to European values and the rule of law. Discussions also touched upon European security and the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine.
Economic ties remain a central focus, with Wadephul accompanied by a delegation of German companies. Currently, German businesses are responsible for approximately 250,000 jobs in Hungary. Both sides expressed interest in expanding cooperation beyond the automotive industry into the electronics and defense sectors. Future engagements include a German-Hungarian Forum and a planned joint cultural season in 2028.
