Germany's Katherina Reiche relies on market actors for gas storage

German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche is facing scrutiny over her approach to national gas storage levels. Major gas suppliers are currently not filling their booked storage capacities to sufficient levels, largely due to high current gas prices and the lack of guaranteed profit margins for winter sales.

Minister Reiche has declined to intervene directly, placing the responsibility for storage levels on market participants. This strategy aims to avoid driving up demand and prices through state-mandated purchases, which could reduce the incentive for private companies to act proactively.

The success of this approach depends on several factors: a winter that is not exceptionally cold, the consistent operation of pipelines and LNG terminals, and the absence of unforeseen geopolitical or technical disruptions.
