German Öko‑Test rates cheap junior toothpastes “very good” and highlights fluoride standards
The consumer magazine Öko‑Test evaluated 20 junior toothpastes in its August 2026 issue. Eleven products earned the top grade “very good”, including all inexpensive store‑brand options sold in German supermarkets and drugstores for about €0.25 per 50 ml tube. These low‑cost brands contain the recommended fluoride level of 1 450 ppm, matching dental‑health guidelines.
In contrast, Procter & Gamble’s Oral‑B junior toothpaste was rated only “sufficient” because it contains the foaming agent sodium‑lauryl‑sulfate, which can irritate children’s mouth lining. One product that replaces fluoride with hydroxyapatite received the lowest rating “unsatisfactory”, as Öko‑Test found the scientific evidence for hydroxyapatite insufficient.
