The Bleilochtalsperre in Thuringia, Germany's largest reservoir, stretches over 28 km in the Saale valley and holds about 215 million cubic metres of water—roughly 86 000 Olympic swimming pools. Built between 1926 and 1932 for energy generation and flood protection, the lake now serves as a popular recreation area with camping, sailing, canoeing and strict motor‑boat regulations to preserve its natural setting.
