Germany's Left Party Deploys Observers to AfD Congress Protests

The Die Linke parliamentary group in Thuringia will send a team of observers to monitor the mass protests planned around the AfD’s federal party congress in Erfurt on 4 July. Seven state‑parliament members, along with Bundestag and other state legislators, will attend to assess whether police de‑escalation tactics are applied and to document any incidents that could become relevant later.

Left faction leader Christian Schaft urged the Messe Erfurt venue to enforce its house rules, especially if extremist, antisemitic or racist statements occur during AfD speeches. Police have announced a large security deployment in anticipation of tens of thousands of demonstrators from across Germany.
