Germany's local council and legal scholars reaffirm commitment to democracy

The municipal council of Wielenbach in Bavaria formally adopted a declaration endorsing democratic values, calling on citizens to sign a pledge in the town hall. The statement stresses the need to protect democratic institutions from misinformation, extremism, and attacks on human dignity, and it urges the community to safeguard children from extremist influence.

Separately, former Federal Constitutional Court judge Prof. Dr. Susanne Baer delivered a public lecture at Humboldt University in Berlin on the role of the court in protecting Germany’s democracy. She explained how the court safeguards fundamental rights and navigates contentious issues such as climate policy, migration, data protection, and gender equality, emphasizing the importance of an independent judiciary for democratic resilience.
