Germany's New Grundsicherung Begins July 2026
From 1 July 2026 the German Bürgergeld is being replaced by a new Grundsicherung for job‑seekers. The Jobcenter will pay the cold rent and heating/operation costs (water, waste disposal, chimney sweep) for recipients, but electricity and cooking gas remain the individual's responsibility. In the first year of benefit receipt, housing‑cost coverage is capped at one‑and‑a‑half times the regional adequacy limit; thereafter only a reasonable amount is covered. Regional adequacy limits for a single person are €650 in Konstanz, €911 in Munich and €358 in Leipzig.
The earnings allowance works on a stepped scale: the first €100 of gross earnings are tax‑free, 20 % of income between €100‑€520, 30 % between €520‑€1 000 and 10 % between €1 000‑€1 200. This yields a maximum exemption of about €348 for a single person and €378 for a person with a child; any income above these thresholds is fully deducted from the benefit. The basic monthly benefit (Regelsatz) remains €563 for a single recipient. Payment dates stay unchanged, with the benefit paid in advance at the end of each month.
