Oak Processionary Moth Infestation Spreads Across German Regions

The oak processionary moth (Thaumetopoea processionea) is expanding its range across northern Germany, with confirmed outbreaks in Guxhagen, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Thuringia and Augsburg. Its larvae carry fine urticating hairs that can cause skin rashes, eye irritation and respiratory problems, especially for children, allergy sufferers and the elderly. Local authorities have posted warning signs, closed affected playgrounds and swimming areas, and are removing nests with specialised suction equipment such as Nilfisk safety vacuums. Some municipalities, like Hochheim, are applying prophylactic biological control using nematodes, while others rely on mechanical removal. The German Federal Ministry of the Environment notes that mild winters and rising temperatures linked to climate change are driving the moth’s proliferation. Parallel reports from Poland highlight the return of the beetle Tęcznik liszkarz, a natural predator of the moth, which may help curb the pest’s population. Continued monitoring and coordinated control measures are being implemented to protect public health and forest health.
