Germany's oldest family businesses: 8 exceed 400 years

The Stiftung Familienunternehmen in Munich has released an updated ranking of the 50 oldest German family businesses. The list highlights eight companies that have maintained operations for over 400 years, surviving various historical crises.

The oldest company identified is the Coatinc Company, a metalworking firm founded in 1502. It is followed by the Prym Group, founded in 1530, which is known for inventing the press stud. All 50 companies on the list are located in former West Germany, as family businesses in the former GDR were nationalized.

Regional concentration is high among the top performers, with the top ten companies located exclusively in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg. The youngest company included in the top 50 is the machine builder Kurtz Ersa, founded in 1800.
