Leipzig Völkerschlachtdenkmal unveils permanent foundation exhibition

A new permanent exhibition has opened in the foundation area of Leipzig’s Völkerschlachtdenkmal after about a year of renovation work. A second escape route in the form of a metal staircase was installed to meet safety requirements, allowing visitors to explore the space independently of guided tours.

The exhibition presents large picture panels and original artefacts that trace the monument’s history—from the 1813 battle it commemorates, through its 1913 inauguration, to its political uses during the Kaiser era, the Nazi period and the GDR. Curator Crawford Matthews said the display aims to give a critical view of how the monument was repeatedly instrumentalised.

The project is part of a broader restoration programme that has invested roughly €32 million since 2003 to repair war‑ and weather‑damage and modernise the technical infrastructure. The Völkerschlachtdenkmal, a 91‑metre‑high landmark, remains one of Leipzig’s most visited cultural sites.
