Germany's Open Monument Day draws millions in 2025 and plans extensive program for 2026

The Tag des offenen Denkmals, Germany's largest cultural festival, attracted millions of visitors on 14 September 2025. Around 6,500 monuments in 2,300 cities hosted more than 9,000 events, ranging from restored castles to hidden cellar tours. Dr. Steffen Skudelny, board member of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, highlighted the event’s role in fostering a shared appreciation of heritage across Europe.

In the Rheinpreußensiedlung housing cooperative, the 2025 celebration coincided with its 40‑year anniversary, offering exhibitions, film screenings and guided walks that drew both local residents and outside visitors.

Looking ahead, the Landkreis Deggendorf announced its 2026 programme for 13 September 2026 in the village of Moos, under the theme “NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur”. The local media conference featured Landrat Bernd Sibler and other officials, emphasizing the historic buildings’ continued relevance to regional infrastructure.

Both the 2025 and 2026 editions showcase the nationwide commitment to preserving and presenting Germany’s architectural heritage.
