Germany's pharmacy chamber and AOK advise on heat health risks

The Saxony‑Anhalt Pharmacy Chamber highlighted the severe health dangers of prolonged high temperatures, especially for older people whose thirst response diminishes, and for patients with cardiovascular conditions. It urged the public to keep medicines in cool, dry places, adjust dosages in consultation with doctors if needed, and use pharmacies as local health advisers during heatwaves.

A study based on AOK data showed that on days over 30 °C sick‑leave rates rise by about 3.5 %, increasing to 5 % after three consecutive hot days and to roughly 10.8 % after a week. The insurer stresses protection for the elderly, chronically ill and women, offering a heat‑risk information portal, a 24/7 medical hotline and regular newsletters with prevention tips.
