Germany's Plattenbau housing faces modern re-evaluation

The legacy of prefabricated concrete housing, known as 'Plattenbau,' continues to shape the urban landscape of Germany. Originally developed as a rapid and cost-effective solution to housing shortages, this construction method was widely utilized in both East and West Germany, with major developments in locations such as Berlin-Marzahn, Halle-Neustadt, Leipzig-Grünau, Munich-Neuperlach, and Cologne-Chorweiler.

While these high-rise developments were once viewed as symbols of modern living, they are frequently associated today with social challenges, poverty, and crime. However, a shift is occurring in how these spaces are perceived and utilized. Some architects and residents are finding value in the compact layouts and horizontal urban breadth offered by these post-war structures. Modern renovation efforts are increasingly focusing on stripping back layers of old plaster and wallpaper to reveal and modernize the original building substance, catering to a growing interest in unique post-war typologies.
