AfD gains regional assembly speaker position in Saxony-Anhalt

The political firewall intended to isolate the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is showing signs of weakening in Saxony-Anhalt. Following a recent vote, the AfD secured its first regional assembly speaker, Tobias Rausch, who received 48 votes.

At least four lawmakers from mainstream parties reportedly defied party instructions to abstain, instead voting for the AfD candidate. Suspicion has fallen on 15 members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) who were directed to abstain during the secret ballot. CDU deputy chair Karin Prien stated that if members are found responsible, there must be consequences.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that extremism is entering the German parliamentary system. The AfD, which advocates for restricted immigration and renewed energy ties with Russia, has described the event as a ‘political turning point.’ The party has been polling higher than the CDU in national surveys for over a year and aims for victory in the 2029 national elections.
