Germany's Sleep Crisis Affects Over 60% of Adults

A YouGov poll in March 2026 found that 63 % of Germans reported sleep problems in the past year, with women at 67 % and men at 58 %. The survey links poor sleep to stressors such as workplace pressure, financial worries, and interpersonal conflicts, and notes elevated health risks including cardiovascular disease, obesity, hypertension and diabetes.

In Austria similar concerns are highlighted, offering practical advice for better sleep and recommending medical checks for chronic insomnia. In Switzerland, the mattress maker Rummel Matratzen promotes fully customisable mattresses and slatted bases, emphasizing ergonomic design, sustainable materials and specialist retail consultation as means to improve sleep quality.

A separate study of 2 000 German adults revealed that 82.9 % ruminate occasionally and 48.6 % do so often or constantly, with women more affected. Main triggers are interpersonal problems, continuous digital availability and the inability to mentally switch off after work, contributing to a broader stress landscape in the country.
