Germany's social welfare system faces funding pressures

Union leaders and policy experts warned that Germany's social welfare model is under strain. At a regional DGB conference in Bavaria, officials highlighted rapidly rising health‑insurance costs driven by high provider fees, expensive medicines and inefficient hospital financing. Proposals included covering non‑insurance benefits such as citizen‑income payments with general taxation, increasing federal subsidies and shifting hospital investment costs to the states.

In a separate interview, Thomas Otto, head of the Saarland Arbeitskammer, cautioned that the current debate could turn into a dangerous reduction of the social safety net. He stressed that the social state is essential for Germany’s prosperity and urged a more critical public discussion to prevent erosion of benefits.
