Germany's SPD faces internal rift over Ukraine military aid

Internal conflict is growing within Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) regarding the nation's policy toward the war in Ukraine and military aid for Kyiv. While the party leadership maintains its stance of supporting Ukraine, a growing faction is calling for diplomatic solutions and a reduction in arms spending.

The debate intensified following the electoral success of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt. Party members, including Ralf Stegner, have warned that prioritizing billions in military aid while implementing social spending cuts provides “fuel for right-wing populists” and acts as “poison for democratic parties.”

Isabel Cademartori, the SPD chair in Baden-Württemberg, also noted that recent election results reflect public dissatisfaction with current foreign policy. To date, Germany has allocated over 100 billion euros in support for Ukraine.
