Germany's SPD urges rapid development of fuel price cap

The SPD is calling on Economic Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) to accelerate the development of a fuel price cap for Germany. Following a coalition agreement between the CDU, CSU, and SPD in mid-September, the government aims to introduce a crisis-driven, temporary price cap by January 1, 2027, modeled after systems in Belgium and Luxembourg.

The proposed measure is intended to protect motorists and businesses from price volatility caused by geopolitical tensions, specifically the conflict involving Iran. While a fuel tax discount is currently in effect until the end of the year, no concrete plans for the price cap have been finalized.

Minister Reiche has expressed skepticism regarding the cap, warning that such an intervention could weaken the domestic refining industry and increase dependence on imports. Meanwhile, the SPD argues that the model must be presented quickly to prevent price surges once the current tax relief expires.
