Germany's Startup Activity Surges to Record Levels in Early 2026
The German Startup Association’s semi‑annual “Next Generation” report shows that 3,053 new companies were founded in Germany between January and June 2026, a 52 % rise over the previous half‑year. Hamburg led the regional surge with an 83 % increase, while Munich recorded 208 new start‑ups, narrowing the gap with Hamburg for the first time since 2023. Per‑capita, the Bavarian capital still edges ahead of Hamburg (13.8 vs 11.3 start‑ups per 100,000 residents), with Berlin at 11.6.
AI played a major role: 1,038 of the new firms have a clear AI link, more than a third of all start‑ups and a higher share than in 2025. The software sector dominated with 844 launches, followed by medicine (274) and food (181). All top‑10 sectors posted growth, including a 125 % jump in the industry category.
In deep‑tech news, fusion‑energy start‑up Proxima secured a €411 million funding round, attaining unicorn status (valuation above $1 billion). The investment underscores growing confidence in fusion as a clean‑energy solution and highlights Germany’s broader shift toward advanced technologies such as AI, climate tech, biotech, robotics, and cybersecurity.
