Europe’s summer 2026 travel prices spike as families brace for higher costs

Summer 2026 sees a sharp rise in travel expenses across Europe. Prices for flights, hotels and ancillary taxes have jumped 50‑70 % in traditional budget destinations such as Croatia, France and Mallorca, pushing many family vacations to the edge of affordability. Flexible travelers can still find lower‑priced options in less‑visited parts of Southeast Europe, Cyprus and Malta, while limited last‑minute deals are reported on Greek islands such as Zakynthos and Spanish islands like Lanzarote.

Consumer‑protection agencies warn that the surge in online bookings also brings heightened fraud risk. In France, the DGCCRF highlighted that AI‑generated images and polished copy are being used to create convincing fake rental listings, prompting travelers to verify sites, payment methods and contact details before paying.

In Germany, the Autobahn GmbH predicts severe congestion on the A3, A5, A7, A8, A9 and A93 from 24 July to 2 August as school‑holiday traffic peaks, especially in southern states. The agency advises checking construction zones and border controls in advance.

Although many European retailers have launched summer sales with up to 50 % off, these promotions are unrelated to travel costs and vary by country.
