Germany's travel trends: short‑haul flights rise, camping stays strong

Almost half of all passenger flights operating at Germany’s major airports are short‑haul routes. Analysts attribute this to the Deutsche Bahn’s frequent delays, limited connections and higher ticket prices, which make air travel appear more convenient and cheaper for journeys under 1,000 kilometres.

At the same time, a survey of about 400 hospitality businesses in Lower Saxony shows that camping remains a popular and resilient holiday option. Despite higher energy, food and labour costs pressuring hotels and restaurants, camping sites continue to attract price‑sensitive travellers, and the sector expects to maintain strong demand even as flight prices rise and geopolitical uncertainties push more Germans to holiday domestically.
