Germany's Ukraine aid spending under scrutiny
Research from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy indicates that only about 40 percent of the 100 billion euros Germany has pledged or spent for Ukraine since 2022 has actually reached the country. Of the reported 100 billion euros, approximately 41 billion euros went directly to Ukraine, while 35.9 billion euros were spent within Germany, primarily for the housing, reception, and income support of Ukrainian refugees.
German officials, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, have defended the spending. Merz stated that funds sent to Ukraine do not detract from domestic social or educational spending. Wadephul emphasized that certain expenditures are dedicated specifically to the defense and security of Germany and Europe, meaning they cannot be redirected to domestic infrastructure like schools or roads.
However, critics and researchers note that while the funds may not be taken directly from existing domestic budgets, the support is being financed through debt. The Ukraine Support Tracker highlights a lack of transparency regarding military aid, noting that the government has not provided detailed information on military assistance since June of last year.
