Merz warns of Russian threats and political extremism at CSU congress

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed the CSU party congress in Munich, warning of a “massive threat” from Russia aimed at destabilizing Germany and the European security order. Merz attributed various cyberattacks, acts of sabotage, and attempts to target critical infrastructure to Moscow.

Merz also criticized domestic political extremism, stating that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) works daily to spread Russian narratives and isolate the country. He asserted that those supporting the AfD “have no place in our Union.” Additionally, he criticized the Left party for its political actions in Berlin, accusing it of inciting hatred against Jews, the police, and Israel.

To counter these challenges, Merz called for increased investment in security forces and the Bundeswehr. He also urged the CDU and CSU to maintain maximum unity and emphasized the need for economic reforms to ensure social stability and reduce the cost of living, including a potential reduction in electricity taxes.
