Germany's Urban Rail Upgrades Delayed Until 2027‑2028

The Berlin U6 subway line renovation has been pushed back again, with the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe now targeting summer 2027 for completion. The work, originally slated for 2025, has expanded to a full renewal of the 70‑year‑old infrastructure after extensive inspection uncovered additional damage.

In the Rhine‑Ruhr region, track works for the Rhein‑Ruhr‑Express will cause long‑term partial closures of the S1, S6 and RE47 services from 2028, with a possible delay to the schedule. The disruption will limit S‑train services to Düsseldorf‑Eller Mitte and affect regional commuters, although supplementary bus services are being arranged. Both projects aim to improve long‑term reliability of the rail network despite the temporary inconvenience to passengers.
