Julian Nagelsmann receives lower severance as Völler defends him

DFB sport director Rudi Völler told a press conference in Frankfurt that former national team coach Julian Nagelsmann’s severance payment is “lower than the figures widely reported.” Völler argued the public criticism of Nagelsmann after Germany’s 3‑4 penalty‑shootout defeat to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 16 was “excessive,” but he also identified several tactical and communication errors made by the coach before and during the tournament.

Völler corrected earlier media claims that Nagelsmann would receive a multi‑million‑euro payout, saying he will not disclose exact numbers but that they are “less than what has been written.” He also singled out a photo taken at the training camp showing Nagelsmann with his partner Lena Wurzenberger on bicycles, calling it “unfortunate” and stating that “photos have a weight” that harmed the coach’s image.

The remarks come nine days after Nagelsmann stepped down under intense public pressure following the early World Cup exit. Völler reiterated his confidence that Nagelsmann will soon secure a top‑club job and that the DFB will continue its preparation for Euro 2028.
