Germany's World Cup 2026 viewership sparks home‑office shift
The opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup – Germany vs Curaçao – attracted 23.43 million TV viewers in Germany, giving ARD a 70.2 % market share and 81.5 % among 14‑ to 49‑year‑olds. The tournament, co‑hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, features 48 teams and 104 matches over five and a half weeks. Public‑viewing events in German cities filled pubs and beer gardens, with fans gathering in large numbers to watch the games.
A Kununu survey found that 22 % of German employees with remote‑work options plan to work from home for World Cup matches, while only 19 % consider midnight kick‑offs compatible with work schedules. Employers warned that work time remains work time; a Cologne labour court upheld an employee warning for watching a match during work hours.
